Clearwater Historical Society Fall Schedule

SAVE THE DATES!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s the Fall Speaker Series at the Clearwater Historical Museum
SEPTEMBER 11, 6 PM- Heritage Village/Monica Drake, Heritage Village Operations
Manager
In 2026, Heritage Village will celebrate its 50th anniversary, alongside the United States’
Semiquincentennial celebration. This milestone is, in and of itself historic, as 50 years
marks the anniversary of the 1976 Bicentennial movement which catapulted many new
historical organizations and societies as well as the development of open-air museums
such as Heritage Village across the country. Join us for this presentation as Monica
Drake discusses the history of Heritage Village and this once-in-a-generation milestone
event.
OCTOBER 9, 6 PM – The History of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office- Ret. Lt. Penny
Cooke, historian, archivist
Voters approved the creation of Pinellas County Sheriff’s Department in 1912. The early
Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office reflected the rough and rural nature of the peninsula at
that time. Bootlegging, moon shining, and gambling were daily occurrences and the
Sheriff’s Office was kept busy running after a host of colorful criminals. Jail escapes
were not uncommon and newspapers reported how inmates sawed their way through
the iron bars with tools smuggled in from the outside.
Hear how the Department has evolved to face the ever changing challenges over the
past century. See an authentic, handmade moonshine still!
NOVEMBER 13, 6 PM – Florida Dreams Amid the Storms/Dr. Gary Mormino, author,
historian
The idea of the Florida Dream first emerged during the Roaring Twenties and
reemerged after World War II.
The idea of the Florida dream holds that there is something remarkable about a place
sitting astride two great bodies of water, a place that promises not only a better
February but a better life. The dream was fulfilled.
On the eve of Pearl Harbor, Florida was the smallest state in the American South.
Today, Florida is the third largest state in the Union.
Is the Florida dream fading?
